Famous Urdu Poets

Many great names contributed to make Urdu diction and expression meaningful and beautiful in the form of poetry. This write-up aims to highlight the famous Urdu poets of different centuries.
13th century
The poetry of Urdu language dates back to 13th century. The most prominent poet of Urdu language of 13th century was Amir Khusro. With his sweet meaningful verses, he became the pioneer of Urdu poetry.
16th century
After the 13th century, Urdu poetry remained somewhat stagnant. However, Quli Qutub Shah revived it in the 16th century.
17th century
In the 17th century, two famous poets created quite some waves in the Urdu poetry. Their names were Wali Mohammed and Mirza Mazhar.
18th century
The 18th century saw many prominent Urdu poets. In those times, the Urdu poetry was becoming very popular. The most famous poets of those times were Mir Dard and Mir Taqi Mir. With their poems and ballads, the romance reached new heights in the Urdu poetry.
19th century
The 19th century was undoubtedly the most prolific and trend setting era of the Urdu poetry. It saw so many truly great Urdu poets. Mirza Ghalib, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Zauq, and Sauda are some of the names of great Urdu poets of that era. These poets totally revolutionized the Urdu poetry.
20th century
The 20th century is the era of even more polished and refined Urdu poetry. The poetry of this era is very much influenced by the political situation. Iqbal, Faiz, and Faraz are the names of three poets whose poetry changed the society in terms of mental growth, stimulation, energy, and morals.
