Role of Urdu in National Integration

“Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.” Benjamin Lee Whorf
A nation cannot stand united in absence of a single mode of communication. This single mode of communication is usually the national language. The national language of Pakistan is Urdu.
The Urdu language has played a great role in the national integration of Pakistan. Pakistan is a country with many distinct geographical regions. Each region has its own regional language. Other than the difference in the languages, each region has different customs, culture, mannerisms, and traditions.

In such a country, it is very necessary to have something common for the national integration. In case of Pakistan, the Urdu language is the common element. It is one of the major sources of national identity. Urdu can be spoken and understood by most of the Pakistanis. The fact that Urdu is a part of the educational syllabus from first until the 12th grade makes sure that a large population is familiar with this language. Other than that in most of the schools of Pakistan, Urdu language is the instruction medium.
Pakistanis belonging to different regions can bond with each other by using the bridge of the Urdu language. The literature of the times of freedom struggle is recorded in the Urdu language. In those times, the Muslim writers, poets, and freedom fighters used Urdu for instilling spirit and courage among the Muslims.
Most of the Urdu writings and poetry of that time are still relevant. That is why people of Pakistan still treat Urdu as a symbol of national integration.
