Rector of International Islamic University, Islamabad Professor Fateh Muhmamad Malik said “Noon Meem Rashid was the pioneer Urdu poet who broke monopoly of traditional Urdu poetry and brought recognition to the modern free poetic genre”, while addressing one day a one day seminar to pay tribute to great Urdu poet Noon Meem Rashid on his 100th birthday.
The seminar was organized by Urdu Department of Oriental College at Sheerani Hall on December 21, 2010.
Mr. Malik further added” Meem Rashid was poet first and a prose writer, critic and essayist second”. He said “Rashid belonged to a rare breed of Urdu poets who had unique command of Urdu language and was known for his love for humanity.”
Chairman of Urdu Department Professor Fakhar-ul-Haq gave an account on Noon Meem Rashid’s life and his contribution towards Urdu literature and his poetic career.
The president of the seminar was Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, Vice Chancellor of Punjab University said “ever since its establishment, the Oriental College had played an enviable role in the promotion of Urdu poetry and literature in the subcontinent”. Dr Mazhar Moeen, Principal of Oriental College, Nasreen Rashid, the daughter of the late poet and Proffesor Dr Mahmood Akhtar also addressed the ceremony.
