Umaira Ahmed is a recent addition to the clan of Urdu popular fiction writers. Most of her pieces of Urdu writings whether they were short stories or novels gained immense popularity. The reason behind this is that Umaira knows her audience very well. She does not write the stories of a distant, lost land. In fact, her stories truly represent the culture and society we live in.
“Baat umar bhar ki hay” is one of Umaira’s Urdu stories that are a mirror of the behavior of people towards ugly people. It also represents what goes on in the heart and soul of an ugly fellow. “Baat umar bhar ki hay” is the story of an ugly girl Momina with good-looking parents and siblings.
Momina is very aware of her ugliness due to the very fact that everybody picks at her. She does not enjoy the privileges in the society that her siblings can, only because of the fact that she is ugly. With a twist of fate, Momina gets married to a very handsome man Farooq. Farooq was least interested in Momina due to her looks and eventually remarries another woman.
Due to this marriage, he starts ignoring Momina and her daughters very badly. Farooq and Momina’s daughter, Sumbal was just as ugly as her mother was but she treated life differently than her mother. Resultantly she reaped different and beneficial outcomes.
In the nutshell, this novel is simply a great addition to Urdu popular fiction and a great revelation for an average mind.
