Urdu Poetry and its Dimensions

The Urdu poetry is one of the richest poetry in the idea and expression all over the world. What have made it so popular are the different dimensions that it has kept throughout the history.
Just like the poetry of the most of other languages, Urdu poetry is enriched by the romantic verses. So many poets contributed to the romantic Urdu poetry. Mir Taqi Mir and Zauq are distinguished names from the past.
The present day Urdu poets also write romantic Nazm and Ghazals. Distinguished names are Wasi Shah and Amjad Islam Amjad. The romance in the Urdu poetry sometimes also highlights the stubbornness of a lover and one-sided affairs. These topics are not touched much in other languages.
Other than the romance, the Urdu poetry also offers a high dose of stimulated verses regarding the fight for freedom and the elimination of the social evils. Many poets with high conscience and high moral values never hesitated to point out the flaws of the government and other social matters. The distinguished poets of this class are Allama Iqbal, Habib Jalib, and Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
The services of Allama Iqbal to the Urdu language are understood. However, Habib Jalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz too, did not lack behind in the light of their eras and circumstances. These two poets wrote a lot about the importance of democracy and social justice. They also faced imprisonment and bans during the times of different rulers.
Anyone who wants to feel a multidimensional take on the poetry must read some of the Urdu poetry or its translations.
