Marsia in Urdu Language

Marsia is sad poem written especially for the martyrdom Hussain and his comrades of Karbala. Marsia is typically on the Death of Hussain and Hassan and their families. Sometimes Marsia is also written on the Death of some relatives or friend. Marsia is consists for different stanzas each stanza has six lines typically. Usually the Marsia is heavily read by the people in the first ten days of Muharram.

This form of Urdu poetry is chiefly found in Lucknow situated in Northern India because Lucknow is the center of Shia Muslim community in India where reading of Marsia is regarded as holy act. Marsia reached sky in the writing of Mir Babar Ali Anis. Lord Alfred Tennyson's poem 'In Memoriam' is also referred as Marsia. The further sub parts of Marsia is noha and soz which means burning of (heart) and lamentation respectively.
