There are four main writing systems of Urdu
- Persian script
- Kaithi script
- Devanagari script
- Roman script
Persian script:
Urdu is normally written from right to left and it is extension of Persian alphabet and Persian it self is the extension of Arabic alphabets. Urdu is normally written in Nastalīq script style of Persian calligraphy and Arabic is normally written in modern Naskh style
Kaithi Script:
Kaithi script was also used for Urdu writing. It was highly Persianized and technical form of Urdu. It was used in British administrated courts of Begal, Bihar, the North-West Provinces and Oudh . Kaithi script’s association with Urdu language was cancelled in an political contest between hindi and Urdu.
Devanagari script:
In India , Recently Urdu speakers have adopted this script for publishing periodicals. Efforts are being made to bring innovation in way to mark Urdu in Devanagari script different from Devenagri Hindi.
Roman script:
Roman script is not commonly used the Urdu writers. Writers started using roman Urdu since British Raj. Because at that time the expenses on writing in Arabic script were high as compare to writing Roman Urdu. Roman Urdu is actually Urdu written in English alphabets. Because of Roman Urdu the communication between the Urdu-Hindi speakers of different scripts in Urdu is possible.
